We’re thrilled to welcome Professor James Crossland, historian of terrorism, intelligence and subversion at Liverpool John Moores University, to this year’s Isle of Wight Literary Festival.
James is the author of acclaimed works including The Rise of Devils: Fear and the Origins of Modern Terrorism and War, Law and Humanity: The Campaign to Control Warfare. He has also written widely on the history of warfare, propaganda, and “fake news” for leading history magazines.
📖 His latest book, Rogue Agent, is the first full biography of Sir Robert Bruce Lockhart (1887–1970) — the diplomat, intelligence agent, conspirator, journalist and propagandist who played a key role in both world wars. Lockhart charmed everyone from Leon Trotsky to Anthony Eden, inspired Lord Beaverbrook to suggest he “could well have been prime minister,” and yet died almost forgotten and destitute.
Part thriller, part forgotten history, Rogue Agent shines a light on Lockhart’s role in the Bolshevik plot, his leadership of Britain’s secret Political Warfare Executive, and his hedonistic lifestyle that left him in perpetual debt.
Critics have called the book:
“Compelling and meticulously researched, the riveting life of a maverick Scottish spy.” – Charles Cumming
“Riveting… reads like a thriller.” – Julia Boyd
“It’s a brilliant book everyone, go and get it!” – Dan Snow
Join James as he uncovers the extraordinary life of a man who shaped the course of modern intelligence and propaganda.
